Wharton Elementary School (705 North Mary Street)

Wharton Elementary (formerly the Mary Street School) opened in 1899. At that time, auto speeds were 30 miles per hour, a matinee at the theater cost 20 cents and the Dow Jones was 63.05. The population of the United States was 76 million and there were 46 stars on the American flag. There have been many changes in this country and in education since that time.
