Meet Cheryl

I am a 34 year old Puerto Rican woman from Brooklyn NY. My family transplanted to Lancaster when I was 12 years old. My father thought it best that I speak English, in order to fit in a little better, so unfortunately I lost most of my second language at a young age. After high school I left good ole Lancaster in search of myself. How could a wild child like me belong in a place like this? After my first shot at college, joining the Air Force, becoming a mother, finally finishing my degree, and living in the south, Delaware, and Ohio, I realized 15 years was a long time to be away from home.

I moved back to Lancaster May 2012 after meeting a beautiful community of folks through Occupy. I have since learned that the self I searched for lives among this land of farmers, artists, new and creative minds, I left my home to find peace, but what I found was peace was waiting for me all along in this beautiful place, among the most beautiful people. Currently, I am the Market Master for Eastern Market, which is located in the Musser Park neighborhood. This has allowed me to grow as an individual. Watching these young farmers come week after week to nourish our community with their carefully grown produce inspires me every day to be the best me I can be.

Three people now living I would like to have lunch with: My sister in law, my son, my herbalist mentor (she lives in Oregon).

The cause I most believe in is: Autism Awareness. I am also seriously against fracking.

Name three things on your bucket list.
1. Sky diving
2. Go to Spain
3. Live on a farm

What did you want to be when you grew up? A farmer.

What are the best aspects of your job? Supporting my farmers. Every week I get to see what the women who have grown MY food are up to. They discuss issues they have experienced, give advice to one another, compliment each other on their produce. Best of all we always have fresh coffee to keep our day lively.

What music are you listening to now? I am obsessed with Beach House, but in my car I play my friend Eli's cd, she's an amazing local artist and of course a FARMER!

Best advice from your parents... They taught me to use my voice, even when everyone around me didn't agree I should always speak up

What should they have taught you in school but didn't? They should have taught me that Just because I don't fit into the mold society created my strengths are priceless. I learned that lesson as an adult, thankfully.

If there is one thing life has taught me it is...To be persistent
