McCaskey Hosts President's Own Marine Band
The School District of Lancaster announced Monday that it will host "The President's Own" United States Marine Band for a free public concert. The event, scheduled for Saturday, October 5, will be held at 7:00 pm at the J.P. McCaskey High School Auditorium.
The Marine Band will perform a varied program including John Philip Sousa's "Semper Fidelis," Johann Strauss, Jr.'s Overture to The Gypsy Baron, Bruce Broughton's Excursions, Alberto Ginastera's Dances from Estancia, John Williams' "For 'The Presidents Own' ", George Bizet's "Sequidilla" from Carmen, and a Salute to the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
The band was established by an act of Congress on July 11, 1798. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson invited the band to perform at his inauguration, beginning a tradition of performances at every presidential inauguration since then. Performing at approximately 500 events a year, the band is embarking on its fall tour, a tradition started by John Philip Sousa in 1891. In addition to inaugurations, the band performs at state funerals and state arrivals.
