"It feels good" said Coach Dave Hinnenkamp when asked how it felt to take J.P. McCaskey to its first State Playoffs since 1982. The Tornados secured their spot with a 6-1 win over Dallastown in the District 3 Consolation game today at Ephrata's War Memorial Field. Senior pitcher James Hartman, coming off a no-hitter against Spring Grove last Friday, went all 7 innings giving up only 1 unearned run on 3 hits, 8 strikeouts and 3 walks. Hartman on his start emphasized, "I had great defense behind me, we put the ball in play, and I was able to relax."
With the win, McCaskey secures a 3rd place finish in the District Playoffs and a berth to the PIAA State Tournament. Despite going into districts as the 16th and last seeded team, the Tornados had the determination and strength to defeat top seeded rival Hempfield, 8th seeded Spring Grove, and 14th seeded Dallastown to finish in third. Suffering a loss only to 5th seeded Lower Dauphin in the District Semifinals, they were able to rebound against Dallastown and continue their season into the State Tournament.
Hinnenkamp, in his 4th season as head coach, credited the current senior class for their recent success. "I feel proud, the kids work hard... I'm glad to see their hard work pay off." The first round of States begins on Monday, June 2nd - site and opponent to be announced.
