McCaskey Director of Choirs Earns Grammy Nomination

Timothy Sterner, IB/AP Music Teacher and Director of Choirs at J. P. McCaskey High School, has been named a quarterfinalist for the Grammy's first Music Educator Award. According to the press release issued today, a total of 217 music teachers from 195 cities across 45 states have been announced as quarterfinalists. In total, more than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states.

Under the Recording Industry Grammy Awards lies the GRAMMY Foundation which seeks to influence the lives of young people by opening the windows of opportunity that music can provide for their futures. In recognition of the significant role of teachers in shaping their students' musical experiences, the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy are partnering to present the first Music Educator Award.

States the foundation, "For every performer who makes it to the GRAMMY stage, there was a teacher who played a critical role in getting them there."

The Music Educator Award will be given out during GRAMMY Week 2014. The winner of the Music Educator Award will be flown to Los Angeles during Grammy Week 2014 for the January 26 ceremony and will be presented with a $10,000 honorarium.

The nomination represents yet another public recognition of School District of Lancaster's strong music program. Earlier this month, the NAMM Foundation named the school district as one of the Best Communities for Music Education for the third year in a row, putting it in the company of 307 school districts nationwide and one of only 34 in Pennsylvania.
